making space. creating community.

Joshua Henry Jenkins (he/him/his)  is an interactive media strategist & organizer of community based out of Washington, D.C. by way of small town North Carolina.

He has worked extensively with independent artists and arts organizations to develop brand identities, digital strategies, and design concepts. He currently works as the Director of Web and New Media Strategies for Americans for the Arts, the nation’s leading nonprofit for the advancement of the arts in America.

He is the current Chair of the Board of Directors for the Arts Administrators of Color Network where he also leads marketing and communications efforts. He is also an alum of the 2017 artEquity Facilitator Cohort and the 2018 American Express Leadership Academy as well as a former member of the Gay Professional Men of Color. He often serves as a grant panelist for the D.C. Commission on the Arts and Humanities.

In service of the communities to which he belongs, he focuses his energy around creating and supporting projects that uplift people of color, LGTBQIA individuals, citizens of rural areas, and most importantly those who exist at the intersections of those identities . He is also a facilitator around issues of equity, inclusion, access, and privilege in organizational workplace culture in the arts.

In addition, he produces and co-hosts the monthly podcast Art Accordingly, which interrogates issues of diversity, equity, and inclusion in the arts alongside Quanice G. Floyd, founder of the Arts Administrators of Color Network. The two have taken a live version of the podcast to the National Performance Network Conference, SphinxConnect, and the Arts Equity Summit. He has a dedicated online store of his designs that he created as wearable celebrations of queer people of color and nods to cultural moments that shaped his identity. In response to COVID-19 and a need to create community in times of crisis, he and his colleague Michael Ward created the Black, Gay, stuck at home project which virtually screens films that center queer folks of color, often bringing in filmmakers, cast, etc. to chat and engage with attendees.

Joshua received his Master of Arts in Interactive Media from Elon University in 2012 and his Bachelor of Arts in Communication Studies from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill in 2010.

The rest of his time is spent digging in crates for R&B/Soul records, live tweeting awards shows, thrifting with his mom, and grabbing cocktails with the awesome people in his life. Follow him on Twitter & Instagram (@joshjenks).
